3) Huck states that people will call him a low down abolitionist and in Illinois, where he lives, and the time period this takes place in, 1880's, he would be scared to be called that because they would blame the escape of slaves on him and most likely lynch him for helping the slaves escape
4) Huck was first concerned about his girl impression, then refused to take off the bonet for rest and lastly he almost stood up for himself after the stranger said that he could be a abolitionist. If a girl was trying to be a boy the struggles would be the voice, the physical appearance like face and chest, and lastly walking style cause men typically slouch while walking while girls usually don't.

chapters 17-21
Chapter 17-21
1) Grangerford clan is an example of a traditional aristocratic family living in the pre-civil war south. They're extremely wealthy: each family member has his or her own personal servant; their house is huge and beautiful; and they own a ton of land with over a hundred slaves
2) Mark Twain presents that the feud between the Grangerfords and the Shepherdsons is about a traditional feud between farmer (“granger”) and rancher (“shepherd”). Why would he write this into the novel? What does it say about these two occupations at this time(Chapter 18)?That it was kinda of a comptishion to them about everthign and ti see whos is better at everything.
3) Toward the end of chapter 18 Huck says “I don’t want to talk much about the next day. I reckon I’ll cut it pretty short.” Huck says this prior to telling us about the big battle. How does our narrator’s perspective play a role in what we think and feel reading this section(Chapter 18)?Well it is telling us about huck and what his feelings before the big battle, because he really cares but might be a little nervous.,They are saying that he preparing nd doesnt want to talk about whats going to happen.
4) Explain who the King and the Duke are. Why does Huck go along with their story (Chapter 19)?The King and Duke and Powerful people and don't like no as an answer,Huck goes along of their story because he doesn't want them to leave since he needs them for the battle and with power they hold.
5) What problems do you anticipate with the Duke’s solution to how they can all run the raft during the day (Chapter 20)?Its just out of order and making some people do it but not all.
6) Illustrate the town that the play will be held in (Chapter 21).
This the illustration from the book

Chapters 22-26
1) The line at the end of the handbill says "Ladies and children are not admitted". The handbill would get people into play because many men would do things if their wives can't come. It allows them to have a "night off" and have more freedom due to the fact that their wives and kids can't come (because they aren't admitted). It's a night for the boys.
2) Jim has so much to worry about, Huck didn't want to add anything else to his plate. I think Huck doesn't find any use in telling him because he plans on leaving the situation eventually. I think Jim already figures that they are fake so, Huck doesn't find any importance in telling him something that is irrelevant.
3) In the book Huck says "It was enough to make a body ashamed of the human race.” . I think that he said this because the King and the Duke being as greedy as they are, decided to act as the brothers of a dead man to gain his land and wealth he left behind. They also made Jim and Huck pretend to be their servants. So overall I think that Huck was ashamed that they were posing to be people they weren't especially when they were talking about an actual life being lost.
4) The Doctor knew that the King and the Duke were crooks because when the Duke gave his speech in his British accent wasn't believable. The Doctor claimed it to be the worst accent he had ever heard because of this he knew that the King and the Duke were frauds and weren't actually related because they didn't know anything about the man himself or his life.
5) The King and Duke are Deciding if they should leave in the middle of the night with all the money they obtained

Chapters 27-30
1) Back in the 1800's, southern people found it necessary to stay awake with a recently dead body especially if it was a relative or a close friend to show there respect. The would usually stay until the casket was made or til the police came to figure out what happened to the body. Through this research it also states, "Once the person died, family or neighbors, usually women, would wash the body, dress it or wrap it in a white sheet, and put it in the coffin. They usually held what was called a wake—sitting with the coffin until the person was buried. This would be a social occasion with food and alcoholic drinks served"(Tennessee4Me.com).
2) We can reassure ourselves that Huck still cares for Jim after telling Mary Jane to wait to tell the others about the money in the coffin so theu could escape peacefully without getting chased after which would get Jim in major trouble since he is a runaway slave
3) The townspeople firstly tested the handwriting from the Duke and the real Harvey Wilks to a letter that came from the Real Harvey in order to see who the fraud was. They came to the conclusion that the Duke was the fraud and so he protested and said that the real Harvey's arm was broken so how could they tell if that really how he writes. Secondly they knew of a tattoo that the real Harveys brother had so they both drew the crest out and and compared it to the actual tattoo on his brothers back. Once again the Duke seemed like a fraud, but the Undertaker said he saw no tattoo of any sort.

Chapters 31-35
1) Huck is praying to God to forgive him for helping Jim, a former slave of Miss Watson, runaway from her after he was about to be sold. He then realizes that he can't pray to that because of all the times he spent with Jim up the river that he still wants Jim to be free so he decides "I guess I'll just go to hell," and goes to save Jim
2) Huck realized that even if Miss Watson gets Jim back she is still going to sell him for money so that is why he tore up the letter to Miss Watson and why would I give up Jim he's always made me happy and I'm his best friend and no best friend is ever left behind.
3) With Tom helping Huck steal Jim back I think that this is almost too perfect because usually if it has such a high cost of getting in trouble then I certainly would not advise doing it, but If it means so much to Huck I can see why Tom would do it, after all it is his best friend that he didn't even know was alive til now.
4) a. “Human beings can be awful cruel to one another.” that is a reference to when Huck and Tom saw the King and the Duke being hung from a rail with tar and feathers all over their bodies. He said this because he could barley recognize who they were and thought that it was so humiliating to have that done to someone that it would ruin there reputation.
b. “But that’s always the way: it don’t make no difference whether you do right or wrong, a person’s conscience ain’t got no sense, and just goes for him anyway.” Huck said this after he saw the King hung up against the rail with tar and feathers all over him. He says this line because he feels somewhat guilty even though he didn't do anything to get them in that position and he hates peoples consciences because of that lingering feeling.
5) Tom comes up with a simple plan, but Huck doesn't like it because it's to simple and doesn't show their style. Tom then opted a crazy plan which Huck even admitted was fifth teen times more stylish than his plan and it might even get them killed. The plan even included doing it in the middle of the day to show more style.

Chapters 36-40
1) In the process of breaking Jim free, Huck finds motivation to free Jim simply because of how they bonded on their trip down the Mississippi River and Tom found motivation through getting a cool story to have. To Tom it didn't matter if it was moral or immoral just if it was a cool, funny story that he could say he was apart of.
2) Huck and Tom use the term "let on" as misleading Sally in to thinking that they don't know what happened with all her things even though they took them. It's misleading Sally because she thinks the rats or virtually anyone else besides these two boys had anything to do with he things.
3) Huck writes the letters and warnings to misguide the Phelps's to think that Jim was stolen from them when it was really just Huck and Tom the whole time and he tells his Aunt's and his Uncle's slave that Jim has been caught to get the attention of newspapers from St. Louis to New Orleans so that people with stop coming after Jim.
4) The planning and plotting of Jim's escape from Huck and Tom is very satirical because they easily could've done it so much easier, but they decided that they needed to do it like the books so that's why they used pocket knives instead of shovels or pick axes and made a "pie" then just hand Jim the things that he would need to escape
5) Huck said "I knowed he was white inside" meaning that even though Jim is a black man who ran away from his owner he deep down knew he had the same thoughts as white folk do when it comes to being guilty. Jim tells Huck that he wasn't going to let Tom die because he needs to be saved,so he's not leaving without Tom going to see a doctor and getting his bullet wound patched up

Chapters 41-End
1) Towards the end of chapter 41: “And then when I went up to bed, she come up with me, and fetched her candle, and tucked me in, and mothered me so good I felt mean and like I couldn’t look her in the face”. Why does Huck feel this way?
Huck feels guilty because she thinks she lost Sid (Tom), and he feels bad knowing that he is still alive and that he helped the slave get away. He doesn't want to look her in the face because he's afraid that if he does, he will tell her everything they did and she will be mad. She expressed so much concern for him even, and the feeling of guilt is overpowering because he made her worry and caused some trouble to help Jim escape. Right after this, Huck and Sally stay up a little longer talking about "Sid" and if Huck thought he was lost of hurt. This shows that she truly has compassion for Huck and Tom, and when he is lying to this woman that has done so much to help and keep him safe.
2) In chapter 42 we hear the doctor’s account of his experience treating Tom: “so I says, I got have help, somehow; and the minute I says it, out crawls this nigger from somewheres, and says he’ll help; and he done it too, and done it very well.” Can we come to an understanding about Jim from this? What do we learn about him?
Jim was so worried and guilty that tom had gotten shot while getting him free that he was willing to sacrifice his newly earned freedom to save Tom. Jim is a thoughtful and kind man. He would do anything to, save his friend who got him and saved him from slavery. The doctor found Tom too injured to be left alone while he gets help, so he says that he needs help, and outcomes Jim. When Jim heard that , he decided that he needed to help and would loose everything to help Tom out. Jim is faithful and the Doctor could tell he was exhausted from being worked too hard lately. Jim was a great 'nurse' to Tom, caring for him and helping no matter what even when it put his life at stake. He was a great man and helped everyone and was a pretty good slave.
3) What do we learn about Tom from what he says when he wakes up after being treated for the gunshot wound (Chapter 42)?
Tom wants to live a life of adventure and he wants people to know that it was him. When he dropped the bomb shell of Miss Watson's passing and that she set Jim free in her will and they were freeing an already free slave, you could see that he wanted the thrill of the adventure more than the reward. He knew that Jim was free but saw it as a way to have a safe adventure. Tom has been keeping the secrets about the death of Miss Watson and the fact that Jim is free tells me that he will do anything to have an adventure. Including freeing someone who is already free.
4) You’ve finished the novel: Tell me, in three to four sentences, what you think of Huck.
Huck is a courageous young man who would always seek an adventure. Huck would never let anything stop him from going on his adventures like when he snuck around Pap with a boat in hand and got away from him. Also he is one of the most genuine characters in this book and you can tell that he's one of those ride or die friends that will stick with their bests till death seeks them part. Overall, Huck is a genuine friend that I would make my kids read about so they would know what a good person looks like.
